Political Corruption

Political Corruption, a relentless force that helped contribute to downfall of the mighty Roman Empire. While you may say this is not the main reason for the downfall of Rome, it was certainly a major contributing factor. Rome's system of choosing new emperors wasn't necessarily the greatest. The Praetorian Guard slowly gained respect through time. With it's newfound authority, the Praetorian Guard was the ONLY group allowed to decide who should rule next. This also meant that they decided who needed a little "hiatus".With many emperors dying at the blade of the Praetorian Guard, it was difficult to maintain an emperor without fear of a new victim that needed a grave. This corruption was running rampant throughout Western Rome. The frequent changes in government also aided to other factors of Rome's downfall, such as Barbarian Invasions, Weak Military, and Environmental Problems.  When Rome couldn't maintain proper government, they were vulnerable and weak. An army could easily take out this once-mighty Empire. I ask you this, would you still rule?
